Now reading – The last lecture

I am not sure how many of you have ever heard of Randy Pausch? I hadn’t till May ’08 when my routine review of the best selling books list on Amazon brought out the Last Lecture. Last weekend in Dubai I picked up a copy at Borders and read it in six sittings.

I only have two words of advice about the book. READ IT.

Here is the context. Randy is a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon who was diagnosed with terminal cancer just under two years ago. Given 3 – 6 months to live and invited to give the last lecture at CMU, Randy spoke about how to achieve your child hood dreams. If you missed the chat, you can catch in online here

Required reading, watching and hearing for all dreamers out there…

    Jawwad,
One question, where do you buy/order books from. I had not-so-good experiences with both Liberty (where I once ordered book and they later said their inventory system has gone insane and book that appear on their site is actually not available in stock) and Paramount (they have got good collection of book but pathetic site).

Particularly this book, can you please advice where can I get its copy in Pakistan.

Ali you would most likely need to walk into a Liberty store and pick a copy. I just picked thirty copies this evening to give away.

In general when I need books, I order via Amazon. Chose expedited international delivery (the option in the middle) and the book will end up on your door step in about ten days.

I have been ordering from Amazon since 1997 so about 11 years. Here in Pakistan, the US and then Pakistan again. They are a little pricey but when you need books in a hurry, or in bulk they are a decent alternative.

With Liberty I have found that walking in and ordering is generally better than doing the site (though I would have loved to do the site).

The lecture was absolutely out of this world. Thanks. I was close to tears several times and in fits of laughter at other times. What I wouldn’t give to go back to university and have someone like Randy as a professor. How the hell do we ensure that we have people who think like him in our academic community. Once that happens our education system will sort itself out. Thanks again Jawwad.

  6. Desi Back to desh » The last lecture screening at Alchemy - July 2, 2008

[...] Today at about 12 pm we did a snap screening of the last lecture. It sort of served as an office warming party, an orientation for the most recent member of the Alchemy team and yet more free food. Some of us had already downloaded and seen Randy’s performance at CMU. This was a chance for the rest of the team to catch up. [...]
